I got a Holga 120WPC camera, in my last few days at Tsinghua I took the opportunity to blast through a few remaining rolls of film.

The Holga 120WPC takes photos in a rectangular 6x12 format, instead of the usual square 6x6. With square photos, a 120mm roll is enough for around 12 photos, whereas this gives only 6.

I struggled to get the ratio right when advancing the film, which lead to a lot of overlapping double-exposures. I’ve recovered by cropping out the edges, so most of these are not shown in their full rectangular length.

It was also almost impossible to get the exposure time correct. I’m no good at judging light by eye, and the advice to expose for ‘9-12 seconds in sunlight’ is too vague. The photos here are the only ones which came out ok, the rest were badly over/under exposed.

This photo is my favourite of the lot.

shaded_avenue

The avenue here runs across the front of Building 6, there are little benches and tables, on sunny days the sunlight scatterers through the leafy tree canopy and lights up the ground.

This is the view from my window, above the avenue.

The flower photos came out quite well, it wasn’t too over-exposed and the bright red petals really pop.

This was an experiment I could only really do because I had to use my film. Counting cost-per-exposure these are likely the most expensive photos I’ve ever taken, and most of them weren’t even usable.
